A Time of War, after Landseer - Antique painting on Winsor & Newton canvas

An antique oil painting on canvas depicting 'A Time of War' by Edwin Landseer. In 1846, Edwin Landseer exhibited two paintings at the London Royal Academy - 'A time of peace' and 'A time of war', depicting two contrasting scenes of the blessings of peace and the horrors of combat.

'A Time of War' shows the aftermath of accurate cannon fire in the Napolionic theatre, with a collapsed shelter killing two cavalry officers and injuring their mounts. A chaotic, smoky scene that encapsulates the melee and indiscriminate maiming of war.

A famous image with the likeness copied on engravings, copied paintings, pot lids, plaques etc, the original painting of 'A Time of War' was destroyed in a flood in 1928.

This oil painting on canvas is considered an 'After Landseer', painted in homage and signed by a T. Davis in 1911. A very proficient hand and executed on a Winsor & Newton canvas, this example is also very nicely mounted in a chunky period gilded frame.

Throughout the 19thC and early 20thC, copies of paintings were made by aspiring artists and were not considered forgeries, this example unknowingly preceding the oncoming first world war where men and horses would once again fight and die together in France.

Approximate dimensions:

Frame: 51.5cm x 41.5cm

Canvas: 35.5cm x 25cm

Condition:

There is a small hole in the canvas next to the black horse's neck. Some surface crackle is present, along with some light marks and age related wear. Overall nice original condition with pleasing signs of age.
