Thomas Wallis & Co. Teddy Bear “Nelson” advertising plate
A rare Thomas Wallis and Co. Ltd. white ironstone advertising plate, beautifully decorated on both sides with black under glaze transfer. Very much of its time, the face of the plate shows a pictorial of Thomas Wallis with ‘Their teddy bear “Nelson”, aged 4 months’, the mascot of the Department Store and Drapers at the end of the 19thC.
The rim bears bold black typography, which includes the Holborn Circus E.C. Address and the statement ‘Don’t look under this plate’, alluding to the fact that you probably will…
The underside of the plate is fully decorated around the rim with all of the departments of the General Drapers and Complete House Furnishers, with a detailed pictorial of the grand storefront on the foot.
A significantly rare offering in superb original condition.
